We Awaken by Calista Lynne – Book Review
This LGBTQ+ fantasy realism is definitely one of the most unique books I’ve read.
Victoria starts communicating with a girl, Ashlinn, in her dream and finds out she is the giver of dreams who has been talking to Victoria’s brother, who is in a coma after a car accident.
Ashlinn also helps Victoria realise she is asexual. Unfortunately, there are hardly any YA books featuring asexuality, let alone an asexual main character. We Awaken really helps to show what asexuality is. Victoria also crushes on Ashlinn, erasing the misconception that asexuals aren’t attracted to anyone.
When Victoria needs Ashlinn’s help, Ashlinn comes into the real world and the romance really starts to grow. Romances can be very predictable, but with both characters being asexual, I was completely intrigued all the way through.
With Ashlinn in the real world, there’s no one to provide dreams and nightmares start to take over – putting pressure on the new romance. This, and the magical realism, makes for a very different story.
I also love the cover (hence the four different pictures above). It’s beautiful with its colourful flowers down one side and I can’t stop staring every time I see it.
My Rating: ★★★★☆
