‘FOR ART’ IS NO EXCUSE TO TREAT PEOPLE LIKE THIS
Alfred Hitchcock also told Joan Fontaine that everyone on the set of Rebecca hated her in order to make her feel paranoid and uneasy.
All of this is so counter to what I was taught about directing, and the actor-director relationship. These tactics are lazy as hell in addition to being abusive, I don’t care how great these directors are. It’s so fucked up.
These aren’t particularly awful ones
in filming Apocalypse Now
the following happened
14 year old Lawrence Fishburne was given class A narcotics to keep him awake
Martin Sheen was fed a mix of alcohol and barbituates [he was a struggling alcoholic] and when he started to wig out they started screaming abuse at him about how everyone on the set had slept with the wife he was struggling to keep due to his travel schedule as an actor –
he had all the actors gather around to watch the slaughter of a cow
and those are the ones i can remember offhand
Werner Herzog!
he just needs a mention on his own
his long term "relationship" with his “muse” actor Klaus Kinski should be a cautionary tale for all aspiring actors
he set fire to the actor’s house – not for a film, just because
he pulled a gun on the actor and screamed obscenities if the actor walked off the already god-awful conditions on set [Aguirre = wrath of god]
he spread rumours about the actor that he insulted them and was sleeping with their wives so fight sequences with him looked more realistic [the rest of the cast were manipulated into hating him so they actually attacked him]
He made the movie My Best Fiend about their “tumultous” relationship
on Fitzcarraldo he insisted a real ship be built for the scene of portage over the mountain so it looked real, so the cast and crew had to drag a real ship up a mountain!
he refused to hire stunt professionals insisting his actors [including Christian Bale] did their own stunts including eating maggots and wrestling a snake [Bale said he was okay with it because Herzog did these things first to show them it was safe]
this seems to be standard practise in Hollywood with these “auteur” directors and it’s absolutely not acceptable
