I absolutely love December- seeing everybody wrap up and talk about the best parts of their years is so enlightening and fun. Even more, there’s all of the rec lists and best books of the year collections! I decided to do one myself, welcome to diverse-read’s best diverse young adult books of the year!! Here is today’s rec:
Why do I rec it?:
Author Mackenzi Lee is a QUEER QUEEN
The MC is bisexual
And his love interest has epilepsy, which is so important because we rarely see mental health covered in YA
His love interest is also POC!! AND THEY ARE CUTE TOGETHER I PROMISE
The MC’s sister is possibly are and is strong as HELL they rest of the characters would be dead without her
The boys are best friends and they seriously love each other and respect each other’s boundaries
It’s queer historical purely because Mackenzi Lee wanted to see “characters like her in historical fiction”
The MC is white and most certainly privileged. Although he abuses it sometimes he eventually recognizes it and becomes more away of what’s going on around him
Generally a great coming of age story and has great POC, illness and LGBTQ+ representation!!!
